The Department of Nursing Services at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) organized an orientation program for its newly employed nurses on May 30, 2024, at Florence Nightingale Hall.

The Chief Medical Director Prof. John Okeniyi, welcomed the attendees and commended the newly employed nurses for their achievement. He emphasized the significance of their roles, urging them to uphold righteousness and integrity, affirming that their positions were earned through merit.

Prof. Eniola Josephine Eziyi, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, encouraged the nurses to be exemplary ambassadors of the nursing profession. She advised them to remain unaffected by negative influences, shun indiscipline, and maintain strong work ethics.

Barrister Taiwo Ige, Head of the hospital’s Legal Unit, highlighted the legal implications of poor healthcare services. She stressed the importance of professionalism and patient advocacy, cautioning against actions that violate the Public Service Rules, medical negligence, and breaches of confidentiality.

Mrs. Adeyinka Obisanya, Head of the SERVICOM Department, discussed enhancing quality care through SERVICOM, emphasizing that patients should receive timely and adequate care without needing personal connections. She encouraged the nurses to avoid the complacency often seen in the civil service.

Senior Staff Association Chairman, OAUTHC Chapter, Mr. Lateef Adeyeni, provided an overview of the union’s history, role, and the rights of newly employed nurses as union members. He explained how the workers’ union mediates between employees and employers on employment terms and conditions and assists in resolving disputes.

Acting Director of Nursing Services, Mrs Olabisi Ajayi, urged the new nurses to embrace continuous learning, prioritize patient care, and seek support when needed. She emphasized the importance of excellence, integrity, compassion, accountability, and treating all individuals with dignity, calling for the maintenance of high standards in nursing practice.

The orientation program concluded with a collective commitment to fostering a professional and compassionate healthcare environment at OAUTHC.
