The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in conjunction with the Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, inaugurated its Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) on Tuesday, 7th November , 2023.

According to the Commission, ACTU will complement the core functions of the ICPC in public service, which are expected to be carried out within the OAUTHC environment.

Its functions include receiving and investigating complaints from members of the public on allegations of corrupt practices, instructing, advising and assisting any officer on ways by which fraud or corruption may be eliminated, advising heads of public bodies to reduce the likelihood or incidence of bribery, corruption and related offences, educating the public on and against bribery, corruption and related offences and enlisting and fostering support in combating corruption.

In his welcome remarks, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. John Okeniyi, expressed his readiness to give full support to ensure the new unit optimally performs.

He said he would leave no stone unturned until the anti-corruption team succeeds. Prof. Okeniyi further reminded the stakeholders within the hospital environment to sit tight in order not to run foul of the anti-corruption laws, just as offenders would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

While delivering his inaugural lecture, the Osun state Resident Commissioner of ICPC, Mr Ademola Bakare, unveiled the three levels of the commission’s mandate with which the anti-corruption commission performs its statutory duties.

Mr Ademola Bakare

Mr Bakare stated that these three core mandates include enforcement, prevention and public education. He also noted that the ACTU was intended to complement the efforts of the ICPC in the fight against corruption in the public service and the country at large.

He reminded the newly-inaugurated ACTU members of the enormity of the responsibility bestowed on them, stating that it required that they should be prepared to give their utmost best in terms of individual sacrifices, sincerity and dedication to the cause of anti-corruption.

The sworn-in ACTU members drawn from various departments of the hospital include Mr Abiodun Oyamakinde (Establishment); Mrs Abidemi Fajobi (Nursing Services); Mrs Ololade Adeniyi (Establishment); Mr Olaolu Azeez (Internal Audit); Mr. Opeyemi Adebiyi (Finance and Account); Mr. Babatunde Akanji (Chemical Pathology); Mrs Bimpe Ogunyinka (Procurement); Mr Jelili Aleem (Pharmaceutical Services); Mr Olusola Oyedeji (Clinical Services) and Engr. Samson Onifade (Civil and Maintenance). The chairman of ACTU OAUTHC, Dr. Ibrahim Bello  (Family Medicine), and Barr. Tosin Ige (Legal Unit) will be sworn in at a later date.
