In commemoration of the 2025 World Hypertension Day, the Department of Cardiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, hosted a one-day public awareness lecture to emphasize the life-saving importance of accurate blood pressure monitoring and proactive cardiovascular care.
This year’s global theme, “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,” marks two decades of international advocacy aimed at reducing hypertension-related deaths by equipping individuals with knowledge on prevention, management, and lifestyle changes.
Opening the event, Professor Rasak Adebayo, Head of the Cardiology Department, applauded participants—including healthcare professionals, staff, and industry partners—for showing commitment to a cause that affects millions globally. He stressed the vital role of early detection and routine checkups in combating the “silent killer.”

Delivering the keynote lecture, Dr. Olufisayo Adesina of OAUTHC’s Cardiology Unit described hypertension as one of the leading causes of preventable deaths worldwide. He underscored the importance of dietary discipline, physical activity, smoking cessation, and timely medical consultation as key tools in reducing cardiovascular risk.
Adding a pharmaceutical perspective, Pharm. Michael Adegoke, Southwest Regional Manager of Embassy Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals Limited, lauded the OAUTHC cardiology team for its clinical leadership. He emphasized the importance of consistent medication use and adherence in blood pressure control, calling it a cornerstone of long-term survival for hypertensive patients.
Nurse Mayokun Akinsete, Head Nurse of the Cardiology Department, praised the supportive role of the hospital’s management and the visionary guidance of Prof. Adebayo. She voiced concern about the rising incidence of hypertension and called on Nigerians to treat symptoms of heart distress with urgency rather than delay.
Other speakers included Drs. Olumide Akinyele, Anjorin, and Moromoke Peter, as well as Mr. Anthony Tolu-Faseye of Mega Life Sciences Limited, who all reinforced the message that heart health must remain a top personal and public health priority.
World Hypertension Day was launched by the World Hypertension League on May 14, 2005, and has been commemorated globally on May 17 each year since 2006. It serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing need to close knowledge gaps and promote preventative care strategies against a condition that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late.
As OAUTHC continues its leadership in cardiovascular education and patient care, this year’s observance stands as a rallying call for all Nigerians: Know Your Numbers. Take Control. Live Longer.
