In commemoration of World Hypertension Day, the Cardiac Unit of the Department of Medicine at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, took proactive steps towards raising awareness and educating the community on the management and prevention of hypertension on the 16th May 2024.
Under the leadership of Prof. Rasaq Adebayo, a renowned expert in cardiovascular health, a lecture was organized at the hospital’s cardiac centre. One of the speakers, Dr. Toheeb Oladipo, emphasized the importance of family awareness, urging individuals diagnosed with hypertension to educate their family members due to its hereditary nature. He stressed the collaborative effort required in managing hypertension, both through medication and lifestyle adjustments.
Identifying common causes such as poor diet, excessive salt intake, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking, Dr. Toheeb advocated for dietary changes, including increased fruit and vegetable intake, reduced salt consumption, and moderation in alcohol and tobacco use. He underscored the significance of medication adherence and regular check-ups for individuals living with hypertension.

During the event, Dr. Ismail Quazim conducted a practical demonstration on blood pressure measurement using a mercury sphygmomanometer, highlighting the significance of both systolic and diastolic readings. He urged the public to monitor their blood pressure frequently and emphasized the importance of accessibility to blood pressure monitoring devices.
Dr. Olumide Akinyele, while aligning with the theme of the year, “Know Your Numbers,” emphasized four essential metrics for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These include blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood sugar levels, and daily step count, with a recommended minimum of ten thousands steps daily. Dr. Akinyele further highlighted the significance of cholesterol levels, distinguishing between good and bad cholesterol, and encouraged proactive monitoring to prevent hypertension.
The initiative aimed to educate and empower individuals to take charge of their health by knowing and managing their vital health metrics. By spreading awareness and knowledge within the community, the Cardiac Unit at OAUTHC continues its commitment to combating hypertension and promoting cardiovascular health.
