The Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, recently hosted the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) for an accreditation exercise. The exercise, which took place from Monday, September 29th to Tuesday, September 30th, 2025, was aimed at strengthening postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery.
The accreditation team, led by the Chairman of the Faculty of Orthopaedics, West African College of Surgeons, Lagos State University, Prof. Adewole Ladipo, inspected various facilities, including theatres, wards, and libraries, to assess the hospital’s orthopaedic training programme.

The Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, welcomed the team and commended WACS for its commitment to surgical education. The team’s preliminary report highlighted the strengths of the hospital’s programme and offered recommendations for further improvement.

Speaking during the exercise, the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Prof. Ayodele Orimolade, expressed satisfaction with the collaborative engagement between the hospital management and the department, emphasizing the visit’s role in producing highly skilled orthopaedic specialists.

The accreditation team which included Prof. Suleiman Giwa, Prof. Kenechi Madu, and Dr. Soliudeen Arojuraye praised the hospital for its academic and clinical excellence. The exercise concluded with a gift presentation by Prof. Okeniyi, marking a significant milestone in advancing surgical education and research in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
