In a major stride toward digital healthcare modernization, the Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) officially flagged off its new Electronic Health Record (EHR) system at the Urban and Comprehensive Health Centre (UCHC), Eleyele, on Thursday, 18th   June, 2026.

The UCHC in Eleyele is one of five specialized units under the hospital complex’s umbrella. The newly introduced EHR system functions as a comprehensive digital database designed to store complete patient medical histories. Hospital officials stated that the technology will provide authorized healthcare providers with rapid access to vital data, eliminate the loss of physical medical records, and more actively engage patients in managing their own care.

During the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Temitope Ojo, the Physician-in-Charge of the Eleyele unit, expressed profound appreciation to the institution’s management for their dual investment in both the digital upgrade and the physical renovation of the facility into a standard, modern hospital. Dr. Ojo noted that transitioning to electronic records firmly positions the facility among world-class health institutions, adding that he looks forward to further achievements at the center.

The Chief Medical Director Prof. John Okeniyi, reinforced this vision in his keynote address, pledging an ongoing commitment to elevating the hospital complex to international standards. The CMD promised additional support to fully equip the Eleyele unit and fund further structural renovations.

Crucially, the CMD announced plans to replicate the digital transformation across all other hospital units that have not yet transitioned to an electronic database. Addressing the facility’s personnel directly, he strongly urged staff members to maintain a strict culture of equipment care, warning them to protect the new computers and infrastructure from damage or theft due to the vital nature of the digital patient database.

While celebrating the technological milestone, senior medical leaders also noted the practical adjustments required during the roll-out. Prof. Kayode Ijadunola, a Honourary Consultant at the UCHC, praised management’s investment but emphasized the need for ongoing system optimization to prevent operational delays and reduce tension during peak clinic hours.

Prof. Ijadunola observed that because many patients are encountering a digital hospital system for the first time, bottlenecks have naturally occurred at the cash point and initial clerking stations. To mitigate these early hurdles, he recommended deploying more hands on deck to assist patients and launching a public sensitization campaign to better educate the community on how to navigate the new digital process.

Other heads of departments present were; the Head, Finance and Account; Mr. Moshood Osunmuyiwa, Director, Audit; Mr. Adewale Junaid, Head, ICT; Mr. Olawale Ajayi, Head, Community Health Nursing; Mrs. Veronica Adeyeni, Unit Head Phase 1; Mr. Ayo Oladimeji, Unit Head UCHC; Mrs. Abiodun Famakinde.
