The Department of Nursing Services, Continuing Education Unit, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, has held its 41st Annual Continuing Education programme, with a call on nurses to continually update their knowledge and skills while strengthening their commitment to quality and patient-centred care.
The programme, held on Tuesday, 8th September, 2026, at the Nightingale Nurses House, was themed “Reset, Relearn, Reignite: Revitalising Nursing Culture for Quality Patient Care.”
In her welcome address, the Director, Nursing Services, Mrs. Olabisi Ajayi, described the programme as an important platform for nurses to reflect on their professional practice, renew their commitment to excellence and prepare for emerging demands in healthcare delivery.
She urged nurses to reset their attitudes, relearn through continuous education and evidence-based practice, and reignite their commitment to integrity, compassion, unity and teamwork, particularly in view of changing patient expectations, advances in healthcare technology and the growing emphasis on patient safety and experience
According to her, quality nursing care goes beyond clinical competence and must encompass dignity, empathy, effective communication, proper documentation and accountability.
She also encouraged participants to translate the knowledge gained at the conference into practical improvements in their various areas of responsibility, while mentoring one another and continually seeking ways to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
Delivering the opening address and declaring the programme open, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, the Physician-in-Charge of the Dental Centre, Prof. Elijah Oyetola commended nurses for their dedication and significant contributions to the smooth running of the hospital.
He described nursing services as angels in healthcare, noting that nurses constitute one of the major points of contact for patients throughout their hospital experience and that healthcare delivery was a team effort, he therefore, urged nurses and other healthcare professionals to continue to demonstrate love, support and cooperation in the overall interest of patients.
Prof. Oyetola further charged the nurses to ensure that the knowledge acquired at the conference was translated into practical action in their respective areas of responsibility.
Delivering the goodwill message the Head, SERVICOM Department, Mrs. Adeyinka Obisanya, representing the Director of Administration, said the role of nurses in the institution could not be overlooked.
Mrs. Obisanya described continuing education as an avenue for healthcare workers to improve themselves, update their knowledge and enhance their professional performance.
She urged the nurses to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge acquired to their daily duties, stressing that ourbestisnotenough and that continuous efforts were required to improve patient care.
The Head, Community Health Nursing, Urban Comprehensive Health Centre, Eleyele, Mrs.Veronica Adeyeni, also commended the organisers for putting together the Continuing Education Programme. She then appreciated the participants and guests for attending, noting that their presence demonstrated their commitment to continuous professional development and the advancement of nursing practice.
The programme ended with renewed calls for stronger teamwork, continuous professional development, effective application of knowledge and greater commitment to patient-centred care among nursing professionals at OAUTHC and beyond.
