In a celebration filled with smiles, the Department of Child Dental Health at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex commemorated World Orthodontic Health Day on 15th May 2023. The theme for this year’s event, “My Orthodontist and Me Smiling Together,” captured the essence of the occasion as patients and staff united to raise awareness about the possibilities of achieving well-aligned teeth, even in the face of irregularities caused by accidents or other factors.
The day kicked off with an enlightening awareness rally held at the department. The rally served as a platform to educate patients and staff members about the significant role orthodontists play in transforming irregular teeth into perfectly arranged dental masterpieces. Dr Samuel Nwota, addressing a gathering of Community Health Workers and patients at the department premises, emphasized the paramount importance of orthodontists worldwide. He elucidated that orthodontics, in layman’s terms, involves the proper alignment and correction of teeth and jaws that have been impacted by injuries or trauma.
To extend the scope of awareness, the department extended its reach to Apex Olive College on Ibadan Road, Ile-Ife. Dr Adedayo Olabintan, supported by a team comprising Dr Ada Njokanma, Dr Soyoye Olabimpe, Dr Oluwagbenga Famro, and Dr Funmilola Agbaje, engaged with the students of Apex Olive College to highlight the potential for achieving regular teeth and jaws.
During the session, Dr Olabintan enlightened the students about the field of orthodontics, describing it as a dental specialty dedicated to the growth and development of the face, as well as the prevention and correction of teeth and jaw irregularities. He emphasized that orthodontists specialize in addressing malocclusion, a condition in which teeth are not properly aligned. Dr Olabintan imparted valuable advice to the students and members of staff, urging them to care for their teeth diligently by brushing twice daily, avoiding excessive sugary foods or sweets, and taking precautions to protect their teeth from injuries.
The celebration of World Orthodontic Health Day at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex served as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact orthodontists have on people’s lives. Through their expertise and dedication, these dental professionals are creating smiles and fostering dental well-being, ensuring that individuals can face the world with confidence and radiance.
