The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, has donated an Advanced Life Support Ambulance to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, through the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (NEMSAS).
The ambulance was officially handed over to the hospital on Friday, 28th August 2026, as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen emergency medical services and improve access to timely emergency care across the country.
NEMSAS is a Federal Government initiative established to provide coordinated emergency medical care and ambulance services, particularly for people requiring urgent medical attention. The newly donated ambulance is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations.
The advanced ambulance is equipped with several emergency medical and safety features, including dual-fuel capability, operating on both petrol and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). It also has dedicated paramedic seats with a capacity for up to three passengers, two fitted oxygen cylinders, an automated external defibrillator (AED), a fire extinguisher and other essential emergency equipment.
Responding to the gesture at the handover ceremony, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. John Okeniyi, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the donation and the initiative.
Prof. Okeniyi assured the Federal Government that the ambulance would be used judiciously and strictly for the benefit of patients and the hospital. He disclosed that the ambulance would be stationed at the Emergency Medicine Department for emergency response and would contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts to revamp and strengthen emergency medical services at the hospital.
The Chief Medical Director further emphasised the importance of the facility in improving the hospital’s emergency response capacity and ensuring that patients in critical conditions receive timely and appropriate care.
