Who says birthday gifts are only for guests? As the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) celebrates its golden jubilee, management decided to turn the tables and give back to its own people, the hardworking healthcare professionals, who keep the hospital running every single day.

On Wednesday, 22nd of October 2025, the hospital rolled out a free medical screening for staff, turning its Mini Auditorium into a wellness hub buzzing with activity, music, and laughter. Blood pressure? Checked. Blood sugar? Sorted. BMI, hepatitis, urine tests, and even dental scaling and polishing — all on the house!

Prof. Oluyomi Okunola, Consultant Physician and Vice-Chairman of the OAUTHC@50 Planning Committee, said the gesture was part of the hospital’s way of saying thank you to its staff.
“We always go out to care for the community,” he said with a smile, “but our own staff are usually too busy saving lives to check on theirs. So today, we brought the care to them.”

Prof. Okunola stressed that a healthy workforce means a stronger hospital.
“We can’t afford to lose any staff to preventable conditions. This is our little way of ensuring that those who care for others also get cared for,” he added.

The event didn’t just check vitals, it lifted spirits. Staff could be seen chatting, moving their bodies to the light music in the arena, and joking about who had the best dental shine.

As OAUTHC celebrates 50 years of excellence in healthcare, training, and service, the free screening has added a personal touch, reminding everyone that the heart of a great hospital beats in its people.
