In line with its commitment to safe and quality healthcare delivery, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, has organised a one-day orientation programme for newly recruited medical interns as part of their one-year mandatory training.

In his welcome address, the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Akinwumi Komolafe, emphasised the significance of the training, describing it as the foundation upon which their medical careers and future choices would be built. He urged the interns to pay close attention to every aspect of the programme, as it was designed to expose them to a wide range of essential topics comprehensively.

In his address, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. John Okeniyi described medical training in Nigeria as one of the most highly subsidised in the world, producing excellent professionals who remain in high demand globally. He encouraged the interns to carefully weigh their options if they were considering migration to developed countries in search of greener pastures, reminding them that there is no place like one’s homeland.

Prof. Okeniyi further assured them that his administration would continue to uphold the legacies of the institution’s founders, particularly in quality medical training. Sharing his personal experience as a house officer at the same hospital, he noted that management is committed to improving on established standards where excellence in healthcare delivery remains paramount.
The orientation lectures covered topics such as: Introduction to the Teaching Hospital System, Roles and Responsibilities of House Officers, Patient Safety and Quality Care, The House Officer’s Personal Health and Self-Care, The Doctor as Team Leader, Discipline, Professionalism, Dressing and Punctuality, Documentation and Record-Keeping, Ethics and Legal Issues in Medical Practice, and Doctor-Patient Relationship.
In her closing remarks, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Josephine Eziyi encouraged the house officers to approach her office whenever they encounter challenges during their training, assuring them of her readiness to provide lasting solutions. She urged them to remain focused and efficient throughout their one-year programme.

Speakers at the programme included Professors Josephine Eziyi, Akinwumi Komolafe, Adebimpe Ijarotimi, Olufemi Oyetola, and Drs. Olalekan Olasehinde, Temitope Ojo, and Olufemi Smith. Other dignitaries were the Director of Administration, Dr. Ayodeji Bobade, and the Head of Clinical Services, Mrs. Boladale Owotade.
