The Department of Radiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, commemorated World Radiography Day with an awareness program at the OAUTHC Ogunlade Hall, dedicated to highlighting radiography’s essential role in modern healthcare. This year’s theme, “Promoting the Profession and Enhancing Public Awareness,” guided discussions on the critical contributions of radiographers in medical diagnosis and patient care.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Waheed Lamidi, Director of Radiography, emphasized radiographers’ pivotal work and expertise in using advanced imaging technologies, including MRI, CT scans, and ultrasound. Mr. Lamidi elaborated on key areas of radiography, such as diagnostic and therapeutic branches, and the specialized focus on various imaging modalities. He noted that the profession is regulated by the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) and the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), underscoring the high standards upheld within the field.
Mr. Lamidi acknowledged departmental challenges but expressed gratitude for the recent addition of 20 personnel, facilitated by OAUTHC’s management. He praised the radiographers, radiologists, and darkroom technicians for their dedication to service excellence.
Representing the Head of Radiology, Dr. Saheed Oyedele, commended the program for bringing attention to the often-underappreciated efforts of the Radiology Department. He highlighted the strong teamwork within the department, which fosters an environment conducive to effective patient care and operational efficiency.
In his address, Chief Medical Director Professor John Okeniyi recognized radiographers as “the cornerstone of modern health technology.” He applauded their skill, adaptability, and significant contributions to enhancing patient outcomes through precise imaging and diagnostic support. Professor Okeniyi reinforced OAUTHC’s commitment to advancing the department’s capabilities, ensuring continuous support for professional growth and technological progress.
The event highlighted radiography’s indispensable role in patient care and emphasized the need for public awareness of the profession’s impact. OAUTHC’s celebration of World Radiography Day aims to inspire future radiographers and deepen public appreciation for this essential healthcare field.
