Following the new policy on technical education in nursing, a team of experts from the National Board for Technical Education visited the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals, Ile-Ife, for a comprehensive verification and accreditation exercise. This exercise aimed to evaluate the College of Nursing Education’s national and higher diploma programmes, ensuring that they meet the required standards and criteria.
While welcoming the team, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Okeniyi, acknowledged that due to inadequate resources and heavy reliance on government funding, there might be minor insufficiencies but assured that management would give such areas priority attention. He also urged the team to highlight excellent areas for encouragement while identifying shortcomings, emphasising the importance of a balanced evaluation.
Pharm. Ibrahim Salihu, the team lead, thanked the management for the warm reception and assured them that the team would conduct a thorough and objective verification process. After the accreditation exercise at the Ilesa and Ife campuses, Pharm. Ibrahim presented their report to management, expressing satisfaction with the level of facilities available in the college and highlighting areas for improvement. The report provided a detailed analysis of the college’s strengths and weaknesses, offering constructive recommendations for enhancement.
The Provost/Director of the College, Dr. Aderonke Awoseemo, acknowledged that the national and higher national diploma programmes are newly introduced policies in nursing education, making certain aspects challenging. However, she promised to make necessary adjustments and improvements before the HND accreditation, demonstrating the college’s commitment to excellence.
Dr. Akinwunmi Komolafe, responding on behalf of the management during the exit visit of the accreditation team, assured that the observed areas of concern would be prioritised to achieve better academic standards that demonstrate excellence at all times.
The exercise concluded with a sense of accomplishment and a renewed focus on continuous improvement, ensuring that the College of Nursing Education meets the highest standards of nursing education.
