The OAUTHC Nursing Services Department at the Wesley Guild Hospital Unit, Ilesa successfully hosted its 39th Annual Continuing Education Conference on October 22, 2024. The conference, centered on the theme “Enhancing the Crucial Roles of Nursing in Global Health Challenges: Strategies, Innovations, and Responses,” included sub-themes addressing critical issues in global health and the evolving role of nursing.
Dr. Ola Ibigbami, the Physician-in-Charge at Wesley Guild Hospital, delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Professor John Okeniyi. In his remarks, Dr. Ibigbami praised Mrs Olabisi Ajayi, Director of Nursing Services, for her exceptional leadership and the seamless organization of the event. He highlighted the dedication and sacrifices of nurses, drawing attention to the pressing issue of healthcare workforce shortages, which he said demands innovative solutions.
In her address, Mrs Ajayi expressed deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the nursing staff, attributing the success of the conference to their collective efforts. She also acknowledged the unwavering support from the hospital’s management, particularly from the Chief Medical Director. Mrs Ajayi emphasized the importance of staying current with advancements in nursing practice and urged her colleagues to be proactive in addressing global health challenges. She underscored the value of continuing education as a tool for strengthening nurses’ resilience and enhancing service delivery, which reinforces OAUTHC’s commitment to excellence in patient care. Additionally, she commended the nurses for maintaining their integrity despite the immense pressures within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Mrs. Gladys Oluwasanmi, Unit Head at Wesley Guild Hospital, delivered a goodwill message, lauding Mrs Ajayi’s leadership and celebrating the department’s recent promotion interview results, which saw a remarkable success rate. She emphasized that nursing remains the backbone of healthcare and commended the commitment of the nursing team to excellence.
The event also included remarks from a representative of the Osun State National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Mrs Oni highlighting the significance of professional development for nurses. The conference concluded with Dr. Abigail Abioye, Chairperson of the Continuing Education Conference Committee, extending her thanks to all participants and contributors, whose efforts ensured the event’s success.
