World Tuberculosis (TB) Day is observed annually on March 24th to raise public awareness about the global tuberculosis epidemic and efforts to eliminate the disease.
This date commemorates the discovery of the TB bacillus by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882, a significant breakthrough in diagnosing and curing tuberculosis.
Over 300 years down the line, despite man’s technological advancements in medicine, the fight against this scourge is still raging. The theme for World TB Day 2024 is ‘Yes! We can end TB!’ which emphasizes hope and determination in the fight against TB. It calls for high-level leadership, increased investments, and faster uptake of new recommendations to turn the tide against the TB epidemic.
As we mark this day, it’s a reminder of the importance of sustained efforts and collaboration to combat this infectious disease that still affects millions worldwide.
The Management of the OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, felicitates with our physicians and healthcare workers who have dedicated their lives to championing this fight against TB. We also wish to acknowledge the efforts of the Government and our various partners in this fight.
To the public and our clients, we are using this opportunity to encourage you to always have your health status checked periodically. Remember, “fighting, famine and fever” all lead to the recrudescence of TB. So, yes, we can end TB, but only collectively from all fronts.
Prof. John A.O. Okeniyi,
CMD, OAUTHC Ile-Ife.
