The Department of Pediatrics and Child Development Centre at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex held a sensitization programme on 2nd April, 2026, to commemorate World Autism Day, drawing parents, caregivers, and children for an engaging and educational event focused on autism awareness.
The programme, organised to promote understanding and early intervention, highlighted the importance of community support for children living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Oluwatosin Olorunmoteni, a Consultant Paediatrician, set an inclusive tone, emphasising the need for empathy, patience, and collective responsibility in supporting affected families.
Healthcare professionals, Esther Uzoejinwa, an Occupational Therapist, provided expert insights during the event. She spoke on essential daily living skills such as feeding, dressing, and play, stressing that patience and consistency are key in caring for children with autism.
In another session, Adebayo Kehinde, a Speech Therapist, educated participants on early signs of autism and effective communication strategies, underscoring the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in improving developmental outcomes.
The sensitisation programme forms part of OAUTHC’s broader commitment to child health and developmental care, reinforcing the message that increased awareness and informed support systems can significantly enhance the quality of life for children with autism and their families.
