An accreditation team from the West African College of Physicians (WACP) visited the Department of Family Medicine at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, on February 18, 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to uphold excellence in medical training and service delivery.
During the visit, Professor John Okeniyi, Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, welcomed the team and praised the accreditation efforts over the past 17 years, emphasizing their positive impact on the institution. He reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to maintaining a conducive training environment, particularly within the Department of Family Medicine.

Speaking on behalf of the accreditation team, Dr. Bukar Grema, the team leader, explained that the visit was primarily aimed at assessing the “software” aspect of the department’s training program. He stressed the need to ensure that the department adheres to established norms and standards to prevent situations where highly skilled family physicians are required to handle primary and secondary cases instead of focusing on specialized care.

The accreditation team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the department’s training framework, faculty strength, clinical exposure, and available resources to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
The team commended the department for its progress while advocating for continuous improvements to enhance the quality of training and service delivery.
