The OAUTHC Obstetric Fistula Team is pleased to announce a special event in observance of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula 2024. This significant occasion will take place at the Wesley Guild School of Nursing Car Park in Ilesa.

The event aims to raise awareness about obstetric fistula, a debilitating condition affecting countless women, and to promote efforts to eradicate it. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field, hear inspiring stories of recovery, and discover ways to support this crucial cause.

Understanding Obstetric Fistula in Nigeria

Obstetric fistula is a severe childbirth injury resulting from prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention- https://www.who.int/. In Nigeria, this condition is particularly prevalent, with thousands of women suffering from its devastating effects. Obstetric fistula leads to chronic incontinence, social isolation, and severe emotional distress. The primary causes in Nigeria include limited access to quality maternal healthcare, early marriages, and lack of awareness about the condition.

Efforts to combat obstetric fistula in Nigeria have been ongoing with Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital being at the forefront of this in Nigeria, working to provide surgical repairs, improve maternal health services, and raise awareness. The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula serves as a crucial platform to amplify these efforts and bring together communities, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to address this pressing issue.

Join us for a day of education, empowerment, and community as we strive to end obstetric fistula and improve the lives of women everywhere.
