President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Prof. John Akintunde Oladotun Okeniyi as the Chief Medical Director of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife.
In a letter signed by Kachollom S. Daju, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the appointment took effect from 24th August, 2023 and for a term of four (4) years in the first instance.
Prof. John Okeniyi, a distinguished Nigerian with a remarkable career in the medical field, was born on 8th July, 1969, and at the age of 54, he assumes the leadership of OAUTHC.
His exceptional qualifications and extensive background make him well-suited to guide the institution to new heights.
Prof. Okeniyi’s educational journey is an attestation to his dedication to the field of medicine.
He attended reputable institutions such as CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos, the University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the Medical University of Vienna in Austria, where he further honed his skills and expertise.
His qualifications are impressive, including a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians in Paediatrics (FWACP Paediatrics), a Diploma in Echocardiography, and a Certificate in Leadership and Management in Health, among others.
Throughout his career, Prof. Okeniyi has earned several prestigious distinctions, awards, and honors.
He received the Heinz Visiting Fellowship from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health of London, the Fellowship from the Nigerian Cardiac Society, and fellowships from the Institute of Professional Managers and Administrators of Nigeria and the American College of Cardiology.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Prof. Okeniyi has demonstrated his commitment to healthcare and education through various administrative and leadership roles within the OAUTHC.
He has served as Head of the Department of Paediatrics and has been instrumental in the development of the Residency Training Programme in Paediatrics.
Prof. Okeniyi’s clinical experience extends beyond OAUTHC, as he has worked in various healthcare institutions across the globe, including hospitals in England, India, the Netherlands, Pakistan, and Israel.
These experiences have not only enriched his medical knowledge but also contributed to the enhancement of healthcare services within OAUTHC.
In his new role as Chief Medical Director, Prof. Okeniyi is poised to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the hospital continues to deliver quality healthcare services to the people.
