The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in partnership with the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, commemorated International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, 2024.
The event, themed “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” featured a sensitisation walk and was held at the OAUTHC Main Auditorium.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. John Okeniyi, emphasised the need for unity in combating corruption, describing it as the primary challenge undermining Nigeria’s greatness.
Representing the ICPC Chairman, Mr. Afeez Hassan, ICPC Resident Commissioner, highlighted the crucial role of youths in promoting integrity.
He stressed the importance of leveraging social media for positive advocacy against corruption while urging collective action through ICPC’s enforcement, prevention, and public engagement strategies.
Hon. Justice Yinka Afolabi, representing the Osun State Chief Judge, underscored the value of personal integrity and the need to embrace Africa’s traditional values of honesty.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) OAUTHC, Dr Bello Ibrahim, in his sensitisation lecture, called for grassroots action against corruption, especially in the health sector, and advocated for whistleblowing to expose unethical practices.
The event concluded with commendations for outstanding contributions to transparency and integrity. Recognised individuals included Dr Ibrahim Bello and Mr Wahaab Oyemakinde, along with several distinguished OAUTHC staff members such as Prof. Ovie Onakpoya, Prof. Edward Komolafe, Dr Abosede Awoseemo, Mrs Elizabeth Babalola, Mr Sunday Omokanye, Mrs. Anuoluwapo Teniola, and Mr. Shedrack Adebambo. These individuals were recognised and commended by the OAUTHC management for their selfless and dedicated contributions to the institution’s growth.
This year’s celebration not only honoured achievements but also reaffirmed the critical role of young people in shaping a corruption-free Nigeria.
