The Friends of Ijesaland Geriatric Center proudly joined the global celebration of the 2023 International Day of Older Persons in Ijesaland, which was held at Ijesaland Geriatric Center.
The day is annually observed across the globe on October 1 to raise awareness of the contributions and achievements of older individuals (defined as those aged 65 years or older) in society as well as to promote their well-being and inclusion in all aspects of life.
During the event, the Chief Medical Director, Professor John Okeniyi, represented by the Acting Deputy CMAC Dr Akinwumi Komolafe, emphasized the crucial role of older individuals in society, highlighting their contributions to knowledge, peace, and sustainability. He further reiterated the importance of inclusive policies and fostering intergenerational unity.
The guest speaker of the occasion, Dr Kayode Ariyibi noted that resilience in old age, defined as the ability to overcome adversity and adapt, was a key focus of this year’s theme with five pillars identified: self-awareness, mindfulness, self-care, positive relationships, and purpose.
The speaker in his words encouraged older adults to “prioritize self-care, embrace change, and maintain a positive outlook for a more resilient and fulfilling life”.
The occasion featured various activities, including free medical check-ups for the elderly and the inauguration of a recreation center within the hospital.
