Love Your Eyes, Opthalmologists urge Children on World Sight Day

The Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, Osun State Branch, celebrated World Sight Day 2024 with the theme “Love Your Eyes: Eye Care for All, Good Sight for Children” at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile Ife on October 10. The event brought together students, teachers, and healthcare professionals.

Prof. Bernice Adegbehingbe, Head of the Ophthalmology Unit, opened the event by and expressed gratitude to the hospital management for supporting the Eye Care Centre, which aims to improve eye health in Ile Ife and surrounding areas.

Dr Akinjide Ogundokun, representing the Chief Medical Director, highlighted the importance of eye care in his speech, urging everyone to raise awareness about the value of protecting their vision. He stated, “When we love our eyes, we protect one of the most valuable gifts we have,” emphasizing that loving one’s eyes allows us to appreciate the beauty of the world.

The keynote lecture, delivered by Dr. Sarat Badmus, focused on “Eye Health Education for Children and Adolescents.” She discussed the critical role of eye health in children’s overall well-being and urged them to safeguard their vision for a brighter future. Prof. Olayinka Olasode, President of the Medical Women Association, Osun State, also attended, encouraging children to apply what they learned and cherish their eye health.

The event concluded with a quiz competition for Primary and Secondary School students, rewarding the best performers with prizes.
