Prof. John Okeniyi marked one-year as the Chief Medical Director of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex on September 18, 2024.
The CMD embarked on his one-year journey in the midst of intense turmoil, and industrial discord. He revealed that he faced the challenges of insubordination, misconduct, unethical behaviors, and over-employment. Despite the tough situation inherited, the CMD showcased a genuine sense of service in various aspects.
In his address the CMD highlighted OAUTHC’s remarkable achievements in healthcare. The institution’s leading position in Nigeria, with 33 ongoing cases of paediatric open-heart surgeries, showcases its dedication to providing advanced medical care. Moreover, the successful completion of 137 obstetric fistula repairs and pioneering laparoscopic surgeries, such as the first endoscopic avulsion of a posterior urethral valve, demonstrates OAUTHC’s commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare services.
Prof. Okeniyi’s strong stance against sexual immorality among members of staff is crucial for maintaining a professional and respectful work environment. His warning of severe punishment, sends a clear message about the institution’s commitment to upholding ethical standards. Additionally, his call to remove beds from offices used by staff on shift schedules underscores the importance of maintaining proper workplace boundaries.
The Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Akinwunmi Komolafe, delivered a warm welcome address at the event, praising the CMD for his exemplary leadership style. He highlighted the commendable work done by the CMD in the past year, despite facing various challenges, and acknowledged the efforts made to address them.
Furthermore, Dr. Obinna Ogbonna from Dietetics Department expressed admiration for the CMD’s significant achievements during his first year in office. Dr. Ogbonna encouraged increased collaboration with staff members and offered prayers for further advancements in hospital services.
Mrs. Olabisi Ajayi, the Director of Nursing Services, shared her thoughts on the CMD’s tenure in the past year. She commended him for promoting transparency among staff, fostering a sense of serenity across the institution, and encouraging staff members to perform better in their roles. Additionally, she expressed appreciation to the CMD for commending some nurses in the hospital.
Mrs. Bola Owotade, Head, Pension and Retirement Department, shared her thoughts on the CMD’s leadership style. She highlighted his boldness and courage in motivating staff to perform excellently, and how he always emphasize the importance of focusing on the hospital’s vision of providing quality healthcare services to the masses as established by the federal government.
Dr. Ladi Fakoya, the Physician in-Charge, Geriatrics Centre , shared his admiration for the CMD’s leadership style of being democratic and highlighted his lifestyle, the way he tackles issues on the ground, and his active engagement with the community stakeholders, which she found truly commendable and the CMD’s approach and his involvement with various aspects of the hospital’s operations.
Prof. Okeniyi’s reforms, from decentralising power to enhancing financial transparency, have improved service delivery. Rejecting nepotism and corruption, he then encouraged teamwork and professionalism, urging all staff to support his administration for continued growth and development.
