In honor of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Association of Resident Doctors of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife, has made a generous contribution by donating over 500 sanitary pads to three selected secondary schools in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

In line with their commitment to corporate social responsibility, the association organized this initiative under the theme “Operation Pad a Girl Child.” Their goal was to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and encourage young girls to prioritize cleanliness and well-being during their menstrual cycles.

During the event, Dr. Ugochukwu Mosanya and Dr. Theophila Ugwu took turns addressing the students, providing them with valuable insights into menstruation and offering guidance on how to care for themselves during and after their periods. They emphasized the importance of changing sanitary pads up to four times a day to maintain good hygiene and prevent the risk of infections and diseases. While Dr. Ijeoma Omenugha answered questions and enlightened the students about the importance of avoiding pre-marital sex and refraining from engaging in sexual activities during menstruation to prevent infections and body odor.

Additionally, Dr. (Mrs) Esan from the Community Health department instructed the students on how to correctly wear sanitary pads to prevent any staining on their clothes and beddings and Dr. Prisca Ogide discussed menstrual pains and cramps, providing valuable insights on how to manage minor cramps without medication and when to seek medical attention for more severe symptoms.

Dr. Kelechi Omenugha, the convener and chairman of the Medical Mission Committee, emphasized the significance of educating both genders about menstrual hygiene and fostering an environment where students support one another during their cycles, without any embarrassment or stigma. He highlighted that menstruation is a natural physiological process that young females experience, which should be celebrated and not a cause for shame.

The three selected secondary schools that benefitted from “Operation Pad a Girl Child” are Christ Way High School, Ebenezer Baptist High School, and Urban Day Secondary School, all located in Ile-Ife.

This commendable initiative by the Association of Resident Doctors of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex in partnership with Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Osun state chapter, Heroes for Her Foundation alongside others demonstrates their commitment to improving the lives and well-being of young girls in the community.
