The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) and the Friends of Ijesaland Geriatric Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, celebrated International Older Persons Day on October 3, 2024, with the theme “Ageing with Dignity.” The event took place at the Ijesaland Geriatric Centre, honouring older people in the community.
The Deputy CMAC, Professor Akinkunmi Komolafe, represented the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC. In his welcome address, Professor Komolafe thanked the dignitaries and attendees, emphasizing the importance of intentionality and discipline in maintaining physical, mental, and social well-being. He highlighted the need for a continuous celebration of older people for a fulfilling life.
The guest lecturer, Dr. Ibrahim Bello, Head of Family Medicine at OAUTHC, addressed the unique challenges faced by the elderly, including dependence, chronic diseases, and limited healthcare access, as noted by the World Health Organization.
He praised Ijesaland for its initiative in enrolling senior citizens in the health insurance system, calling for further improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare framework to serve older citizens better. Dr. Bello encouraged seniors to manage stress, communicate openly with healthcare providers, prioritize sleep, undergo regular screenings, and adhere to medication regimens.
Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Yinka Fasuyi, expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and attendees, stating that the health insurance system in Ijesaland aims for a life expectancy of 100 years. He highlighted the state-of-the-art facilities at the Geriatric Centre, including a 36 million naira Robot Interactive Machine capable of diagnosing ailments. Chief Fasuyi commended the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC for his commitment to advancing the Geriatric Centre and acknowledged the support of the Ijesaland community locally and abroad.
The Royal Father of the Day, Owaloko of Iloko Ijesa, Oba Akeem Olusayo Ogungbangbe, urged attendees to adopt a progressive mindset. He admonished them to make the most of their health insurance cards, emphasizing that they are non-transferable, and encouraged them to take full advantage of this opportunity.
The event concluded with a call for ongoing support and collaboration to enhance the quality of life for the elderly in Ijesaland and its environs.
