World Heart Day, observed annually on September 29, highlights the importance of heart health and raises awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This year, the Cardiology Department at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, marked the occasion with a sensitisation event themed “Use Heart for Action.”
In an engaging keynote, Nurse Mayokun Akinsete compared the heart to a car engine, stressing that a malfunctioning heart affects the entire body. She underscored the importance of early prevention and management of CVDs, urging attendees to adopt heart-healthy habits such as eating balanced diets, exercising, managing stress, and limiting salt, alcohol, and fatty foods.
Dr Qazim Ismail, another speaker, called for a multi-level approach to tackle heart diseases. He emphasised the role of public education, government funding, and accessible healthcare. Dr Ismail advised regular health screenings for those over 40, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar checks. He further highlighted the importance of early intervention and lifestyle adjustments, such as regular exercise and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, especially for diabetic patients.
Dr. Toyyeb Oladipo’s lecture focused on empowering individuals to combat hypertension, a leading cause of CVDs. He recommended being mindful of family medical history and undergoing screenings for early detection. Dr Oladipo encouraged dietary changes, including the consumption of vegetables and nuts, while avoiding carbonated drinks, alcohol, and fatty foods that clog arteries.
Prof. Rasaq Adebayo, head of the Cardiology Unit, wrapped up the event, urging everyone to take responsibility for their heart health. He emphasised the event’s theme, calling on attendees to “use their hearts for action” and adopt lifestyle changes that promote cardiovascular wellness.
