The Radiology Department, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), on Thursday, 16th July, 2026, organised a commendation service in honour of its former Head of the Department and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee(CMAC), the late Dr. Anthony Bamidele Hamed, in recognition of his distinguished service and immense contributions to the growth of the institution and the medical profession.
The solemn event, held at the Department of Radiology premises, attracted members of the hospital’s management, retired and serving professional colleagues, friends, mentees and family members of the deceased, who paid glowing tributes to the late Consultant Radiologist.
Delivering his tribute, the Chief Medical Director, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Prof. John Okeniyi, commiserated with the family, friends and professional colleagues of the late Dr. Hamed. He described the late Consultant Radiologist’s passing not merely as a loss but as a celebration of a life of remarkable service, noting that his immense contributions to OAUTHC would continue to speak for generations.
Prof. Okeniyi shared a personal experience, recalling how Dr. Hamed led the team that accurately diagnosed a serious medical condition he developed many years ago while he was still a lecturer. According to him, the timely and precise diagnosis enabled him to receive prompt treatment, averting what could have become a life-threatening medical situation.
He paid glowing tribute to the late physician’s exceptional brilliance, outstanding medical acumen and remarkable diagnostic precision, describing him as an invaluable asset to the institution whose absence would be deeply felt.
Also paying tribute, Prof. Muheez Durosinmi expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and colleagues. He reminisced about their friendship, which began in September 1973 when they both gained admission into the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ibadan, a journey that culminated in the award of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree.
Prof. Durosinmi commended Dr. Hamed’s exemplary sense of duty, professionalism and administrative competence, noting that he successfully combined his responsibilities as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) with his academic and clinical roles as a Consultant Radiologist. According to him, Dr. Hamed served both the University and the Teaching Hospital with distinction, while numerous developmental milestones recorded in the Department of Radiology during his tenure continue to benefit the institution.
Similarly, Prof. Bolanle Ibitoye described the deceased as an inspiring mentor and teacher whose guidance motivated her to pursue a career in Radiology. She recounted several instances in which Dr. Hamed imparted practical lessons on medical ethics, discipline, professionalism and integrity, values that have continued to shape her professional career.
Responding on behalf of the family, the eldest son of the deceased, Mr. Ayodele Hamed, described his father as a man who was deeply passionate about Radiology and medical scholarship. He said Dr. Hamed devoted countless hours to writing academic papers, conducting research and making meaningful contributions to the advancement of medical practice.
Ayodele expressed profound appreciation to the management of OAUTHC and the Department of Radiology headed by Prof. Olugbenga Ayoola for organising what he described as a befitting commendation service in honour of his father, noting that the gesture exceeded the family’s expectations. He also thanked retired colleagues, friends, associates and family members for their overwhelming support, presence and heartfelt tributes.
Born on 29th May, 1952, Dr. Anthony Bamidele Hamed received his medical education at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, graduating with the MBBS degree in 1978. He subsequently specialised in Radiology, completing his residency training at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. As part of his postgraduate training, he undertook a clinical attachment at the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, College of Medicine, University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom, before earning the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Radiology.
Dr. Hamed joined the Obafemi Awolowo University/Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAU/OAUTHC) as a Lecturer and Consultant Radiologist. During his distinguished career, he served in several leadership capacities, including Head of the Department of Radiology and later Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) during the administration of Prof. Roger Makanjuola between 1989 and 1997.
Following his service at OAUTHC, he relocated to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he continued his professional career at Al Imam General Hospital. He returned to Nigeria in 2004 and established a private radiology diagnostic centre in Ilesa, Osun State, where he remained committed to quality diagnostic services and mentorship until the end of his life.
Dr. Anthony Bamidele Hamed passed away peacefully, after a brief illness at Iyiola Hospital, Ile-Ife, on 26th May, 2026, just three days before his 74th birthday. He is survived by his wife, children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, relatives, friends, professional colleagues and numerous mentees whose lives he profoundly impacted.
