In a heartfelt valedictory ceremony held on May 9th, 2024, at the Clinical Skills Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), the distinguished career of Professor Oluwafemi Kuti was celebrated amidst a gathering of esteemed colleagues, family members, and well-wishers.
Professor Kuti, a stalwart in the field of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Perinatology, was recognized for his remarkable contributions to medical research, education, and policy formulation. Dr. Ibrahim Awowole delivered a compelling citation, tracing Professor Kuti’s academic and professional trajectory characterized by excellence, including prestigious awards such as the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Merit Award for Academic Excellence and the Pediatrician Association Award for the Best Student in Pediatrics.
Professor Kuti’s career spanned prestigious hospitals in the United Kingdom before he returned to Nigeria, dedicating himself to advancing maternal healthcare. Notably, he spearheaded the establishment of the feto-maternal subspecialty within the OAUTHC’s Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Perinatology Department. His impact extended beyond national borders, with his research influencing World Health Organization (WHO) and national health guidelines.
The valedictory ceremony was graced by distinguished personalities, including Professor Niyi Makinde, Head, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Perinatology; Professor Oludayo Sowande, Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences; Professor Babatope Kolawole: Provost, College of Health Sciences, OAU; Professor John Okeniyi, Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, and Chief Host; Professor Simeon Bamire: Vice Chancellor of OAU and the Chairman of the occasion was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor O.M.A. Daramola.
They collectively highlighted Professor Kuti’s unwavering commitment and integrity in their remarks. Tributes poured in from colleagues, students, and family members, underscoring his profound influence on the medical community.
In his address, Professor Kuti emphasized the urgency of reducing maternal mortality rates, advocating for professionalized midwifery care and improved healthcare standards across all levels. He called for access to free antenatal care, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to combat maternal mortality.
Expressing gratitude to attendees and his department, Professor Kuti, accompanied by his wife Mrs. Omolanke Victoria Kuti, reflected on his journey with humility and pride. His son, Dr Femi Kuti, CEO of Reliance Health, conveyed a heartfelt vote of thanks. The celebrant expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and gifts from the department and Action Trial group.
