In commemoration of the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula on Tuesday, 23rd May, 2023 survivors at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) came forward to recount their harrowing experiences and express heartfelt gratitude towards the hospital’s management and staff.
At a poignant ceremony held at the Dame Olayinka Obaleye Obstetrics Fistula Centre, Wesley Guild Hospital Unit of OAUTHC in Ilesa, the survivors, who had once lost all hope, showered accolades on the dedicated gynecologists and other members of the fistula care team for transforming their lives and erasing their long-standing sorrows.
These courageous survivors, who received treatment without any financial burden, highlighted the exceptional care they received throughout their stay: from medical tests to laboratory investigations and even daily sustenance, the hospital covered all their expenses, allowing them to focus solely on their recovery.
During the address of the Ag. Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC delivered by the Physician-in-Charge of the Wesley Guild Hospital Unit, he expressed profound appreciation for the outstanding dedication of the hospital’s gynecologists in providing exemplary service to their patients.
Dr Akintunde Olowookere, the PIC, Wesley Guild Hospital Unit, OAUTHC, urged the fistula care team to maintain their unwavering commitment to excellence, ensuring that the highest standards of care are consistently delivered.
In recognition of their unwavering efforts and remarkable contributions to the treatment of obstetric fistula, distinguished individuals were honored with the title of “fistula ambassadors.” Among the esteemed recipients were former Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, Prof. Victor Adetiloye, Prof. A.B Adeyemi, Prof. Olufemiwa Makinde, Mama Dame Olayinka Obaleye, and Mrs. Eunice Olamijuwon.
The ceremony shed light on the crucial work being done by OAUTHC to eradicate obstetric fistula and restore hope to countless lives.
